Recently, COSCO SHIPPING Ports Chancay (Peru) has been awarded one-star certification under the Huella de Carbono Perú (HC-Perú, “Peru Carbon Footprint”) Program administered by the Ministry of Environment, Government of Peru (MINAM). This milestone marks a phased achievement for Chancay Port in greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and environmental management, and demonstrates its solid progress towards low-carbon and sustainable operations.
The “Peru Carbon Footprint” initiative is a key GHG-management mechanism led by MINAM. Its star-rating system encourages enterprises to conduct accounting, verification, and emission reduction. There are four progressive certification levels: Accounting, Verification, Reduction and “Reduction+”. Enterprises may apply for higher tiers only upon satisfying respective requirements. The one-star award confirms that Chancay Port has completed the calculation, quantification, and official registration of its greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2025 in accordance with the program’s specifications. It has established a systematic foundation for carbon emission data, laying a solid foundation for subsequent reduction management. As this certification belongs to the initial stage of carbon management, Chancay Port will continue to strive for higher levels, including the Two-Star verification, Three-Star reduction, and Four-Star “Reduction+”.
Green development runs through the entire cycle of Chancay Port’s planning, construction, and operational activities. As a modern port project, Chancay Port has implemented numerous advanced green facilities, relying on automated and intelligent equipment to enhance operational efficiency and reduce resource consumption and environmental load. On the energy side, it has achieved 100% renewable electricity supply, cutting carbon emissions at the source; on the operation side, it continues to promote the electrification and intelligent transformation of equipment and optimize operational organization, achieving the harmonious coexistence of port operations and the surrounding ecology.
Chancay Port extends its green practices to the broader social level, actively collaborating with multiple stakeholders including the Maritime Authority, environmental agencies, schools, and communities. It has implemented a series of public welfare activities such as beach cleanups, wetland protection, and environmental education outreach, encouraging employees, students, and local residents to participate together in ecological conservation. Regarding the Santa Rosa Wetland (Humedal Santa Rosa), the port has partnered with local organizations to establish ecological protection signage and conduct science popularization campaigns, enhancing public awareness of wetland protection and extending the port’s green influence and social value into the fields of ecological conservation and public environmental education.
Moving forward, COSCO SHIPPING Ports Chancay will continue to expand the application of green energy, promote energy conservation and carbon reduction alongside the green upgrading of equipment, and strengthen the identification and control of key emission sources to explore diversified emission reduction pathways. At the same time, the company will deepen collaboration with the government, environmental organizations, communities, and schools, continuing to participate in ecological protection and environmental education projects and working together to support local green sustainable development in Peru.
