On the occasion of its first anniversary of commercial operations, the Port of Chancay has notched up outstanding operational results. This modern port, invested in and constructed by COSCO SHIPPING, has become a crucial logistics hub connecting Asia-Pacific and Latin America, delivering significant economic benefits to Peru and garnering high praise from the local government and business sectors.

Located approximately 80 kilometers north of Lima, the Port of Chancay commenced operations in November 2024 and received its commercial operation permit in June 2025. As a project adopting a market-oriented corporate investment model, it has not added to Peru’s fiscal debt burden. The port has launched 3 mainline and 4 feeder services, connecting major ports in China and covering numerous South American countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, and Panama.
In its first year of operation, the Port of Chancay has demonstrated strong operational capability and economic performance. The port’s total import and export value reached $3.65 billion, its container throughput exceeded 500,000 TEU, its bulk and general cargo throughput reached 2.412 million tons, and it handled via ro-ro transport 42,000 branded vehicles from various countries. The port has contributed over 1.64 billion Peruvian soles in tax revenue to Peru.
The port’s efficient operations have significantly invigorated regional trade. Thanks to the substantial reduction in maritime transit times and the improvement of its cold chain system, the export of high-value Peruvian agricultural products has been strongly promoted. Premium fresh produce such as blueberries, grapes, and avocados now accounts for 50% of the port’s export cargo, effectively driving the upgrading of Peru’s foreign trade.
All relevant parties in Peru have given positive evaluations of the Port of Chancay’s contributions. Juan Alvarez, Mayor of Chancay, hailed it as an important driving force of Peru’s economic development. Jorge Chávez, General Manager of the National Port Authority of Peru, stated that the port has consolidated Peru’s status as a natural bridge between South America and the Asia-Pacific market. Deputy Mayor Fabiola Morales of Lima pointed out that the port has created plenty of local jobs and is one of the most important investments Peru has seen in recent decades. Edgar Vázquez, an expert from the Association of Exporters of Peru (ADEX), emphasized that the port has cut shipping time for Peruvian cargoes to Asia by 17 days.
COSCO SHIPPING has stated that it will continue to improve the port’s comprehensive functions, expand its global shipping network, and deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Peru.
