Green Operations

OOCL applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) during the strategic planning phase of vessels to minimize environmental impact as well as risks to health and safety during ship decommissioning.

Green Technology R&D

On July 17, 2024, the shipborne ultragravity carbon capture system independently developed by COSCO SHIPPING HEAVY INDUSTRY Technology (WEIHAI) Co., Ltd. received the Principles Approval Certificate from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The system offers shipowners a carbon reduction solution with vessel compatibility and medium-term technological advantages. ABS approval further enhances vessel applicability and provides critical guidance for onboard system integration, fundamentally advancing decarbonization in the shipping industry.

Green Ports

Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal has reduced greenhouse gas emissions in operations through facility electrification, promotion of unmanned electric container trucks, renewable energy applications, and technological innovation. It has been recognized as an “Asia-Pacific Green Port” three times.

Green Energy

We issued the Regulations on Shore Power Management for Group’s Ports and Vessels and completed shore power upgrades for 23 vessels. We built China’s first batch of large methanol dual-fuel container ships, equipped with the world’s first set of methanol dual-fuel main engines, methanol dual-fuel generators, methanol dual-fuel boilers, and methanol fuel handling and supply systems, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 8.9%, which is 52.8% below the IMO baseline.

Over the year, vessels used 51.9773 million kWh of shore power, shipyards and terminals used 9.2777 million kWh, container ships consumed 53,896 tons of B24 biofuel, pulp carriers 198 tons of B24 biofuel, asphalt carriers 295 tons of B30 biodiesel, and LNG dual-fuel car carriers 8,000 tons of LNG fuel.

Low-Carbon Fleet: Setting New Industry Standards

We systematically advance fleet transformation through the construction and upgrading of low- and zero-carbon fuel vessels. We are building methanol dual-fuel container ships, ore carriers, and crude oil carriers, and have delivered China’s first ammonia-powered tugboat. In addition, we are constructing and operating LNG dual-fuel car carriers. In 2024, 33% of our newly added and ordered capacity consists of low-carbon fuel-powered vessels.
