Originally built for maritime transport, 16 steel containers journeyed 4,000 kilometers to the Tibet plateau to serve as insulated shelters and provide warmth for the locals. This is the second consecutive year that COSCO SHIPPING Development Co., Ltd. has provided such support for the snowbound region.
The story begins on June 20, when 16 specially designed containers carrying both supplies and goodwill departed from Jinzhou in Liaoning Province to their destination at Tibet. The route took them through Lhawala Pass, a high-altitude crossing at nearly 5,000 meters above sea level, where snow lingers year-round. Given the challenging mountainous terrain and strict vehicle length restrictions, COSCO SHIPPING Development’s Jinzhou Container Factory meticulously planned the logistics plan. The containers were constructed with reinforced steel and extra-thick insulation to withstand the extreme cold and fierce winds of the plateau, which ensures the containers’ safe traversing of the 5,000-meter plateau.
On July 9, after overcoming obstacles such as torrential rains and landslides, the 16 housing modules finally arrived at the “Roof of the World” -- Tibet’s heartland. What will these containers become on the plateau?
Cultural & Tourism Stops Accommodating Freedom and Dream Along the Road
Some of the 16 containers will be modified into cultural & tourism stops along the national highway. These innovative tourism facilities are constructed using four 3.2-meter-wide repurposed shipping containers. Designed with a distinctive ethnic aesthetic, they seamlessly integrate traveler amenities, tourism information services, and cultural product displays—truly embodying the concept of “small space, big possibilities.”
Some of the station’s ingenious features include a rear double-door design that allows easy movement of large items. Vertically mounted solar panels, optimized for maximum sunlight absorption, significantly boost power generation efficiency. Expanded battery compartment ensures a stable and reliable power supply. Ventilated facade with double-row louvers transforms the “metal box” into a breathable space.
If you drive along the national highway and stumble upon one of these cultural and tourism stops, we hope it could become a cherished memory of your journey in Tibet.
Multi-founctional Halls Providing Warmth and Security on the Snowy Plateau
The rest containers will be modified into multi-functional halls for local schools. COSCO SHIPPING Development implemented a modular container housing solution, optimizing container dimensions for efficient transportation and assembly. Through interlocking modular combinations, they achieved a “space transformation” effect, maximizing functionality. In terms of safety and space efficiency, the interlocking double-layer structure ensures rock-solid stability, even in extreme conditions. The first floor includes a multi-functional layout (kitchen, storage, warehouse, and bathroom), while the second floor features a spacious dining area, convertible into a training or activity space. Every inch of space is optimized for practicality and comfort.
To withstand the plateau’s harsh climate, each module incorporates cold-bridge prevention, gutter system, detachable sunshade, and sunroom for enhanced insulation and drainage, adjustable natural lighting, and weather protection. These containers underwent rigorous simulation testing by professional designers and certification by accredited institutions, ensuring they meet both practical needs and national construction standards.
