The 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) was held in Shanghai from July 26 to 28.
With the theme of “Sailing Towards an AI-Empowered Global Supply Chain”, COSCO SHIPPING was a featured participant at the WAIC exhibition hall’s booth H2-C1316. Its extensive experience in smart shipping was recognized with a series of prestigious awards, including “Strategic High-Value Scenarios of AI Application by Central Enterprises,” “Outstanding AI Leader Award,” and “AI + Transportation Key Scenarios.” These honors further solidify COSCO SHIPPING’s leading position in the digital transformation of the global shipping industry.
The following part offers a detailed introduction to these key examples of COSCO SHIPPING’s innovative practices reshaping the shipping industry.
01. “Level 4 Autonomous Driving Container Truck for Smart Ports” was officially designated as one of the first batch of “Strategic High-Value Scenarios of AI Application by Central Enterprises”
Spearheaded by COSCO SHIPPING Ports, the level 4 (L4) autonomous driving container truck technology integrates advanced systems such as high-precision positioning, multi-sensor fusion, dynamic path planning, sophisticated traffic event perception, and behavior prediction models. This integration enables precise navigation, real-time obstacle avoidance, and intelligent scheduling within the complex and dynamic environment of a modern smart port. The operational cost for a single L4 autonomous driving container truck is over 60% lower than that of a traditional automated guided vehicle (AGV). And these L4 vehicles can operate 24/7 without interruption, helping to control the unit cost of container transportation. Compared to traditional fuel-powered trucks, the energy consumption per container is reduced by approximately 25%.
Currently, L4 autonomous driving container trucks have been deployed at scale across multiple Chinese ports such as the port of Xiamen, Wuhan, and Quanzhou, as well as international ports including Abu Dhabi port in the UAE, and Chancay port in Peru.
02. “Vessel Safety Visualization” shortlisted for both the “Outstanding AI Leader Award” and the “SAIL Award’s Top 30 list”
Spearheaded by COSCO SHIPPING Technology, “Vessel Safety Visualization” is built upon a foundation of multimodal data fusion and a ship-shore collaboration framework, integrating industry best practices in vessel management. Its core strength lies in a highly modular architecture featuring over 150 intelligent models and more than 100 reusable components. This design allows for rapid, on-demand assembly to implement more than 40 distinct business scenarios, enabling a deployment time of as fast as two days to meet the diverse and specific needs of shipping enterprises.
Through advanced techniques like deep learning and incremental learning, “Vessel Safety Visualization” can process over 10 million data points per day from vessel operations and dynamically refine its models in real-time, creating a powerful “technology-scenario-data” feedback loop. This enables proactive identification of potential management issues with an accuracy rate exceeding 98%, leading to continuous improvements in overall vessel safety operation performance.
03. Hi-Dolphin recognized as benchmark for “AI + Transportation” Key Scenarios by SASAC
Developed by COSCO SHIPPING Technology, Hi-Dolphin is the world’s first publicly accessible maritime large language model (LLM). It is built on a Chinese domestic open-source LLM framework and supported by local computing power infrastructure. Leveraging AI technologies - including natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and reinforcement learning, the model integrates a multimodal maritime language database featuring 200GB of specialized maritime corpora, 400,000 industry-specific Q&A pairs, 2 million maritime-related images, and 4 million intelligent data tags. Currently deployed across 31 core operational scenarios, Hi-Dolphin enhances efficiency in shipping administration, vessel operations, and carbon emission management, driving the sector’s digital and intelligent transformation.
At the 5th Information Technology Service Industry Application Skills Competition held during the WAIC, two innovations by FLORENS (a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Development) secured two honors: the Second Prize (AI Technology and Application Track) for its “Dynamic Container Allocation System Using LLMs & Intelligent Optimization Algorithms”, and the Third Prize (Big Data Analytics Technology and Application Track) for its “Global End-of-Life Container Treatment Platform Powered by Digital and AI Technology”.
