From Hainan to Chancay: New Direct Shipping Route Achieves Wins-Wins for Trade and Local Communities

Date:2025-10-29 Read times: font size:[ L M S ]

On the evening of October 27, the Hainan Yangpu International Container Terminal (Yangpu Port) witnessed a historic moment. The COSCO SHIPPING WSA3 Far East-South America West Coast Route successfully started operation at Yangpu Port. As the vessel M.V. COSCO ASIA slowly departed, this new route officially ushered in a new era of direct shipping between the Hainan Free Trade Port and the Chancay Port in Peru, which facilitates more prosperous trade exchanges between Hainan and South America.

Shipping Route Upgrade

From Hainan to Chancay, Faster and More Cost-Effective Direct Shipping Service

Previously, for enterprises in Hainan to connect with the WSA3 route, transfers at other ports were required, which not only prolonged transportation time but also increased overall logistics costs. COSCO SHIPPING Lines has now strategically optimized this route by designating Yangpu as a direct call while maintaining its existing services. The service offers a stable 29-day one-way transit time and is supported by 10 large container vessels to ensure a robust shipment capacity.

This adjustment has enabled Yangpu Port to connect the “coastal areas of China - Southeast Asia - the Pacific - South America” logistics chain. It has not only strengthened its own role as a hub of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor but also established a direct “trade bridge” between Hainan and Chancay, laying the foundation for subsequent trade facilitation following the port’s designation as a customs clearance zone.

Chancay Port is an important natural deep-water port and regional logistics gateway on the west coast of South America, while Yangpu Port is the core port for the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port and an important hub of the New Western Land-Sea Corridor. This direct shipping route will significantly enhance the logistics efficiency between Hainan and South American countries, effectively reduce overall transportation costs, and further strengthen the strategic position of Yangpu Port as a “two-way dual-hub international port” (i.e., the southern hub for China’s domestic north-south shipping routes and the eastern hub for the east-west shipping routes from Southeast Asia to North America) facing the global market.

Empowered by Special Customs Operations of Hainan Province

Quality Products for Both Markets to Benefit the People

With this new shipping route, high-quality frozen aquatic products from Hainan, such as tilapia, no longer need to transit through other ports. They can now directly reach South American markets like Peru and Chile via the WSA3 route. This not only significantly improves logistics efficiency but also effectively reduces overall transportation costs, making “Hainan flavors” more competitive in the South American market.

Meanwhile, South American specialties such as Peruvian avocados and Chilean cherries will also benefit from the “WSA3 direct service + free trade zone policy” to reach Hainan directly with lower logistics costs and fresher quality. This not only enriches the variety of fresh produce available to island residents but also strengthens the supply chain resilience of the Hainan Free Trade Port following its full operational status.

Solid Support

A Stronger Port for A Secure Future

At present, leveraging the deep-water berths of Yangpu Port, COSCO SHIPPING is steadily advancing the port expansion project. Fourteen advanced cranes have been commissioned and put into operation. With the completion and acceptance of the second phase of the terminal and harbor basin projects, the annual design throughput capacity of Yangpu Port will steadily increase to 5 million TEUs, laying a solid foundation for undertaking larger-scale transoceanic trade.
