Unveiling the Value Concept of “Hub Ports”

Date:2024-10-14 Read times: font size:[ L M S ]

On October 9, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers inked a framework agreement with SIPG to establish a multi-purpose supply chain hub. This collaboration aims to leverage the combined transport advantages of COSCO SHIPPING’s specialized services for pulp, commodity trucks, and equipment cargo within the Luojing Port area, striving to create a world-class multifunctional supply chain hub. Prior to this agreement, the “hub port” concept had been successfully piloted in Zhang Jiagang and Qingdao Ports, effectively demonstrating the principle that “turning hours into wealth."

On September 22, the 62,000-DWT multi-purpose heavy lift vessel “GUANG FU”, operated by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, achieved a milestone by loading 65,400 metric tons of general cargo at the terminal of Zhang Jiagang Port Group. The vessel then sailed fully laden to the distant west coast of America, setting a new record for the volume of ordinary general cargo loaded at a single port by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers’ fleet. Despite facing challenges from two consecutive typhoons and the overall pressure on the Yangtze River, the vessel efficiently completed its “berthing + operation” phase, with all domestic operations concluding within just 13 days.

This operation marked the inaugural trial of the “hub port” concept by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, introducing the “Zhang Jiagang Model” of “single port loading and unloading” along the “Far East - West Coast of America” route. This innovative model involves offloading and/or loading all cargo from a ship at a single port in Zhang Jiagang.

On September 26, the 72,000-DWT multi-purpose pulp vessel “GREEN OSHIMA,” operated by COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, embarked on its maiden voyage to the east coast of South America with a full load of general cargo. The entire shipment was loaded at Qingdao Port. With robust support from the port authority, the vessel swiftly completed berthing and loading operations in just four days, marking another milestone in the development of the “hub port” concept along the company’s “Far East - South America East” route.
