On May 18, COSCO SHIPPING and China Classification Society (CCS) signed a cooperation agreement on promoting “peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality” in Shanghai. Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING, Capt. Xu Lirong, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of COSCO SHIPPING, Mr. Sun Yunfei, President of CCS, Mr. Mo Jianhui, and President of CCS Shanghai Branch, Mr. Meng Lingyi, attended the ceremony and witnessed the signing of agreement. Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING, Mr. Huang Xiaowen, and Vice President of CCS, Mr. Sun Feng, signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of each side respectively.
According to the agreement, the two sides will focus on the national development strategy of “peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality” in order to carry out research on energy consumption mix in accordance with the requirements of international maritime greenhouse gas emission reduction and the climate neutrality targets of EU’s “Green Deal,” and formulate a technical roadmap for the shipping industry to achieve “peak carbon emissions and carbon neutrality.” They will also work together to make key technological breakthroughs, build an international cooperation platform, and promote the establishment of industry standards and the production of International Maritime Organization (IMO) proposals in order to lead the way and provide useful experience for the high-quality development of the shipping industry.
Before the ceremony, the two sides also had a discussion on further deepening their strategic partnership to facilitate China’s ambition to hit a peak in carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
