A delegation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by Mr. Han Zheng, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, paid a visit to the Hellenic Republic from June 11 to 13. During his visit, Mr. Han Zheng met with top Greek leaders, including Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tripras and Parliament President Nikos Voutsis. Moreover, the delegation headed to Piraeus, a sister city to Shanghai, to inspect the construction and operation of the Port of Piraeus, the largest port operated by Shanghai-based COSCO SHIPPING in Greece, with a view to advancing practical cooperation between Shanghai and Greece, a major country involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
When inspecting the Port of Piraeus, Mr. Han listened to the report of Capt. Xu Lirong, Chairman of the Board of COSCO SHIPPING, about the overall picture of the port. Then he visited the Chinese and local executive managers there and the crew of M.V. COSCO ITALY, which was berthing at the port. Mr. Han said that, we should follow the important instructions of President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang and build the Port of Piraeus into the largest port of container transshipment in the Mediterranean, the bridgehead of land-sea multimodal transport, and a key node in cooperation regarding the Belt and Road Initiative, in an effort to drive the extensive, practical and win-win cooperation between the two countries. The CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and the Shanghai Municipal Government will continue to support the development of COSCO SHIPPING so that this SOE can make full use of its advantages and better serve and implement national strategies.
Mr. Han Zheng also met with Mayor of Piraeus Yiannis Moralis during the inspection. The two leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement on the establishment of sister ports between the Port of Shanghai and the Port of Piraeus, as well as an agreement on strategic cooperation between COSCO SHIPPING and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd.
On the afternoon of June 12, Greek local time, COSCO SHIPPING and Shanghai International Port concluded a framework agreement on comprehensive strategic cooperation and an MOU for comprehensive cooperation in the office building of COSCO Shipping Piraeus Port Ltd. Meanwhile, an MOU for cooperation between the Port of Shanghai and the Port of Piraeus was also signed. Capt. Xu Lirong, Chairman of the Board of COSCO SHIPPING, and Mr. Athanasios Liagos, a shareholder representative of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) and an advisor to COSCO Shipping Piraeus Port respectively inked the agreements with Mr. Chen Xuyuan, Chairman of Shanghai International Port. According to the agreements, the two sides will deepen cooperation in ports, shipping, shipping services, and shipping finance to boost cooperation and development of key ports along the Belt and Road and give new impetus to the building of the Shanghai international shipping center and the friendly cooperation between China and Greece.
Mr. Li Jun, Vice Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, Mr. Zou Xiaoli, Chinese Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Zhou Bo, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Executive Vice Mayor of Shanghai, and Mr. Zhuge Yujie, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee joined the inspection. Mr. Yu Zenggang, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING, Mr. Fu Chengqiu, President of COSCO Shipping Piraeus Port, and heads of the Group’s relevant divisions also attended the event.
